Potato Thriller 1 Year Anniversary!

This post is like an hour and a half late, but it is still technically the 22nd in some areas so I will post this anyway! (Even though the posting date says the 22nd, I am actually posting this on the 23rd from my end because I was always too lazy to set up the proper date in my time zone. Actually, all of the dates on my blog posts are off by one day. This isn't making me look very professional. ANYWAY! LETS GET INTO THE ACTUAL POST NOW)

Today marks the one year anniversary of Potato Thriller! On this exact day (almost exact day) last year (June 22, 2016) I released a special version of the game originally called "Potato Thriller Steamed Potato Edition" on the Steam store. As an independent game developer, this marked a major milestone for me personally. I know that this game isn't perfect and it definitely is not for everyone but, it is a project that is very special to me and it is something that I am very proud of. This game marked many first for me. For example, this is my first game on Steam, this is the first game that actually got me feedback and criticism from players, this was the first lengthy game I ever made and so on. The list goes on and on.

With that said, I think the biggest one for me was that this was the first game I made that was actually being seen by people and played. which means everything to me as a developer and it is the most awesome thing. And I want to clarify that I am not trying to make it sound like I am saying "oh a lot of people bought this game and I made a ton of money, look at me i'm a successful game developer har har har" - This isn't what I am trying to say at all. Honestly, I barely made anything off the game. But I don't want to get into that stuff. This post isn't about money or success or bragging rights or anything like that.

What I mean is that, as silly and stupid this game was, people actually gave it a chance. I created a game, I put it out there and it was given a chance to just be a thing in the world of video games. Or I guess I should say the indie game scene and for that I am so grateful. The game got a lot of love from many fans while at the same time received a ton of hate from just as many people. And I am grateful for that. I think it is every artist's dream not to have their work loved by everyone, but to have people notice their work, critique their work and so on. Potato Thriller was that project that did that for me.

Anyway, this is starting to become a messy blog post and just me rambling, but from the bottom of my heart I want to thank all of you out there who have supported me as a game developer, took interest in my work, sent me some feedback, gave me criticism and so on. I want to thank all the people who gave Potato Thriller a chance, all the players of Potato Thriller, all you YouTubers and Streamers who covered the game on your channels, game journalist who wrote reviews and articles, people who did fan art, the people who reached out to me with messages telling me how much they enjoyed the game and so on. I am truly grateful. You are all awesome and are the reason I stay motivated to continue creating games and other stuff. I appreciate each and every one of you.

To celebrate, Potato Thriller is currently 70% off on Steam as of this post. This sale is part of the Steam Summer sale which runs from June 22nd to July 5th. You can check out the Steam Page here if interested: http://store.steampowered.com/app/486650/Potato_Thriller/

Happy Birthday Potato Man!

I can't believe that it has been a full year since I released this game. Time really does fly by. It's funny because looking back at Potato Thriller a year later, I am starting to see the many flaws the game has and why many people hated it. I see some bits of the game and face palm at my own work and say to myself "I can't believe I did that" or "why did I think it would be a good idea to put this in the game?" Again, it wasn't the perfect game. I understand how it came across as amateurish and low quality to some people. I'm not disagreeing with anyone. However, it is still something I am proud of. It shows me as a developer from a certain point in time. I really did put in a lot of work and effort into the game and made it the best I could possibly with the skill set level I had.

With that said, I am truly passionate about creating games. It is something that I love doing and want to keep doing. I really do care about delivering unique memorable gaming experiences and I am constantly working hard to improve. Over the year I feel like I have really matured a lot as a game developer and really am starting to take creating games more seriously. That doesn't mean I won't make my games silly and stupid anymore, they can still be silly and stupid, but at the same time need to have a certain level of quality to them.

Looking to the future!
It has been a full year since Potato Thriller has been out on Steam and it has also been a full year of silence. I haven't published anything new at all after Potato Thriller. However, this doesn't mean I haven't been working on anything. I have been developing a couple of different projects actually and I look forward to sharing them sometime in the future. Thanks for reading and more updates soon!

Potato Thriller Updates + Steam Sale

Hello everyone. Potato Thriller has recently been updated with many new improvements as well as new hidden content. Also, to celebrate the start of my recent new Steam GreenLight campaign for my upcoming game Samer Hills - Potato Thriller is currently on sale for 55% off on Steam. Limited time only.

For a full list and more detail on the update check out the latest news announcement for Potato Thriller here: Potato Thriller News Update

or visit the steam store game page here: http://store.steampowered.com/potatothriller

Thank you.

As an indie game developer I absolutely love creating interactive experiences. I work hard to constantly improve and create better and better games each time. This may come as a surprise to some of you who have played Potato Thriller, but quality and originality are two of the most important things to me believe it or not. When it comes to games, it has always been about creating something fun. Something people can get a good laugh out of. Most of all, being different. Not creating games about collecting pages, surviving x amount of nights or killing waves of zombies. But, creating something different. Of course I understand that my games may not be appealing for everyone. However, the purpose is to offer something for those of you looking for something different.

To the Potato Thriller community, people who played any of my games, left any form of feedback or criticism, visited my developer blog, talked to me on twitter, reached out to me, etc. I would just like to give the warmest thank you to all of you for all the support you have given me as a game developer. Thank you so much for your interest and inputs. You are all awesome.

More news and updates to follow.

Here's the plan... (Next Steam Greenlight campaign)

I have been making excellent progress on my next game project and I gotta say, I have never been so excited about anything I have ever made as much as I am for this new game. Anyway, I don't want to start rambling on about how much of a good job I did on my new project. That doesn't mean anything at all. Instead of going on and on about how great I think my game is - I need to actually focus more on completing it and getting it out there. Gotta tone down that ego. Sheesh!

Anyway, in all seriousness, yes I have been making excellent progress on the game however, it is no where near complete. It's not even close to where I want it to be yet. That is not necessarily a bad thing. I am taking my time with this one and polishing it up in every area as much as I can. Polish and quality is something I have been talking a lot about lately here on the blog and it is something that I am really stressing and pushing into the next game. I want the game to be as good as I possibly can make it.

As much as I am proud of my first Steam release Potato Thriller. This game will be nothing like Potato Thriller in anyway. Not even close. And I don't want it to be like Potato Thriller actually. As I said in an older blog post, I have grown and matured a lot since the release of Potato Thriller and really have learned and become more skilled as a game developer. I want this next project to show that. I am capable of more Potato Thriller type games.

I know I often say this, but I will try to say this in the least braggiest way as possible - This is going to be the most polished thing I have ever worked on. Damn! that still came across as egotistical... Honestly though, I am just really excited about the work I have put into this project and I keep trying to show that in the blog updates but it comes across as some looser indie developer who is really full of himself. But it really is not my intention to come across like that.

Next game has dev's name in the title... Say's he doesn't want to
come off as egotistical...

The reason I want to share this next game so bad is because when I originally released Potato Thriller, sure it had some fans but, it also had a lot of other people who criticized it harshly.
And I have said this before, but I always accept all forms of criticism. I have nothing against negative criticism at all. I actually even agree with most of the criticism I got over Potato Thriller and this is really one of the main reasons as to why I am trying to improve and show that with my next game. I feel like I kind of got this image as some kind of "hack dev" or some cheap indie dev who doesn't care about the quality of their games and just puts stuff out to make a quick buck. That is not me at all. I care so much about the quality that goes into my games. Hopefully I can do that with my next game. And I am really excited to get it out there and share it with the world. I love video games so much and respect them as the wonderful art form that they are. I'm very passionate about games. It's cheesy I know.

WOOOOW character has different uniforms built in!

This game will definitely be a 2017 release. But hopefully early 2017. I had originally planned on launching the Greenlight campaign on Steam for this game by the middle of the month if I reached a certain point in the games development. Unfortunately that won't be happening. So here's the plan (for now) - I am not that far off from hitting that "certain point" in the games development. What I want to do is get more done. My goal is to try launching the Steam Greenlight campaign by the end of this month and then hopefully finish and release the game early 2017. No promises just yet. Might not happen. But that is what I am aiming for and working hard to stay on my schedule. In the meantime there will probably be less blog post and updates but I will come back on here and share more whenever I get a chance to do so! If I launch my Greenlight campaign before the end of this month then I will definitely post an update here on the blog.

Until then, this might be the final post of 2016. If it is, I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful holiday break. Spend time with your families, play some video games! See you in 2017!

Things are gonna get weird...

Punished Ponytail...

So I posted this "box art" for my new upcoming game "Samer Hills" on my twitter about a day ago. Does it look familiar to anyone? This boxart shows "Punished Ponytail".... "Woooooahhh hooooooooo!!!! Wooaaaah hooooooo-oooooooo words that kill!!!"

In case you haven't figured it out yet, clearly this is a reference to Metal Gear Solid V. I have stated this before on the blog many times, but I am a huge MGS fan and a huge fan of Hideo Kojima and his work. He is one of my favorite game designers of all time.

As you can see, I shamelessly copied used inspiration from the Metal Gear Solid V box art to make mine. I originally did this as a joke but then I really liked how my box art actually turned out. So there it is. A harmless parody box art of the original MGSV box. Hideo Kojima is actually a huge role model for me as a game designer and one of the reasons I am so into game development. I often use inspirations from his works in my own work and that can be seen in my projects. My previous game "Potato Thriller" was heavily inspired by his Silent Hills/PT demo. Actually, Potato Thriller was essentially a parody game of PT but at the same time didn't really have anything to do with PT and stood out as its own game if that makes any sense.

With all that said however, I would just like to clear a couple things up for "Samer Hills". Just because I made a parody box art of the MGSV box art does not mean that the game itself will be a parody of Metal Gear Solid V. Again, this box art was just done jokingly and for fun. "Samer Hills" will be nothing like MGSV and it will not be a parody game of MGSV. I am trying to create a very "Samer Khatib" original horror game experience.

This game is going to be very different than any other game I have ever made so far. This time I am extremely focused on the overall quality of the entire game. Every area such as graphics, mechanics, etc will be a huge step up for me. Polish is very important because I want to really deliver a good quality game and I am very excited to hopefully share the game with everyone soon in the future. More updates coming soon.

It is no longer "Hamar Hills" - Game re-named to "Samer Hills"

Hello everyone. Just as the title says, I have decided to re-name my newest upcoming game to "Samer Hills" (originally "Hamar Hills") . I have decided to rename the game for a few reasons actually and all of them are perfectly valid. So today I want to take a moment and talk about the new name and explain why it has changed.

First of all, the game was originally called "Hamar Hills" so right from the start it sounds confusing to many people. What the heck is a "Hamar" or what does it even mean? Why was this even considered to be the name of the game originally anyway? These are all good points and I agree that it was a very silly and stupid name for a game actually but the reason why I did want to originally name it this is because "Hamar" is an arabic word which means "Donkey". So essentially the game "Hamar Hills" translates to "Donkey Hills". You are probably thinking now: "wow, this is still a really dumb name even after hearing the translation. Why would you call the game "Donkey Hills"?

I originally came up with the name "Hamar Hills" or "Donkey Hills" because the main enemies of the game were going to be this group of donkeys that you encounter throughout the game. The game was originally planned to be a game about a character who wonders off into the town of "Hamar Hills" only to later find out that the town is abandoned and is being run by this evil donkey gang - hence the original name of the game "Hamar Hills". This all still must sound very silly as a game idea and writing it down makes me realize that it is. But you really need to be in my head to see how I was originally imagining it to play out and I don't think I could really describe it. But anyway that is not the point right now.

The game is taking a different direction, its not just about donkeys. The more and more I develop the game, the more ideas I get and want to add in. So its really not just focused on one thing anymore. It is going to still be a pretty weird and silly game though. So, because the change of focus, I have renamed the game to "Samer Hills". This name makes more sense. A lot more sense actually. The game is about many strange and random ideas that I just picture in my head. My real name is Samer, so essentially in "Samer Hills" you are just entering this world of ideas that spawned from my head instead of just a silly game about evil donkeys. It is kind of hard to explain, but I think it will make a lot more sense once the game is finished and people can play it. Also, the game is somewhat inspired by "Silent Hills". It won't really be anything like "Silent Hill" or a parody of it or anything, but renaming the game to use the same initials feels nicer than what was used before.

Another major reason I changed the name (and this one is seriously important) is because after doing some research I found out that the word "Hamar" isn't just an arabic word. Okay so it means donkey in arabic but it might translate to something else in different languages and I don't want this headache. I don't want to possibly bring up any problems because of naming a game a certain name. Also I found out that "Hamar" is the name of some kind of cultural tribe or whatever in some parts of the world and I don't want to confuse people with the name and make them think that it is a game about this real life tribe or anything. The game has nothing to do with this tribe, it has nothing to do with anything in real life. Whenever I make a game, I always just make up my own fictional worlds, characters, story lines, etc that are not connected to or related to anything in our real world. The original name for my game "Hamar Hills" was implying the translation from arabic to mean "Donkey" as I stated above. It was a coincidence that I found out that the word "Hamar" is used differently in other cultures and languages and was not intentionally trying to be anything other than being translated as "Donkey" from arabic. It is a very good thing that I did my research and caught that before continuing to go with the original name. Moral of the story, be careful when trying to pick a name for your game. Do some research on that name. See if it is used differently other than the ways you originally thought.

Anyway, I am really glad I changed the name. I am very happy with the new name I decided to go with and it does make more sense overall for what the game will be about. So bottom line, yes. I did just name my next game after myself...

More updates soon!

Im back. Updates. Making a new weird game + future plans

Hey everyone. I am back and have a lot of cool stuff to talk about. I'll just cut right into everything without rambling on and on. The character you see above is a new character I recently created. He has a ponytail. I named him "Ponytail". I am experimenting around and plan on using him for my next game. What kind of game will it be? I don't know yet. I never plan any of my games. I always just create stuff randomly and throw that stuff into the unity engine and eventually come up with a game. Maybe that is why my games end up turning out so weird. *cough* Potato Thriller *cough*

Anyway, I created ponytail, I threw him into the unity engine and made a small prototype demo.

Again, just messing around at the moment with no real game design plan.
Hey, remember those donkey characters I made a while back and also showed off a working prototype demo of? You know, these donkeys ?
Well guess what, they are back! See!

I will probably make the donkeys and ponytail part of the same game instead of making two separate games. Who knows, maybe down the road I will also make a separate game for each character. But lets focus on whatever this project is going to turn out to be first.

Here is another screenshot from the new demo. If you remember, the coffin models here are the same ones I made a while back when I announced that I was making a cartoony game about a vampire and garlic. Do you remember? You know this one over here. Yup, I posted an update that day, said I was making some game featuring that vampire character and then vanished. I haven't updated the blog since. What happened to the vampire game? I don't know. I might eventually go back to it. But for now, my interest has shifted to making a game featuring my new ponytail character.

If you guys haven't noticed by now, I make a lot of 3d characters and 3d models in general. I have so much 3d stuff I create, esp characters and then end up not using. I literally could make dozens of new games with all the 3d models I create on a daily basis. But that just isn't really my development style. I like to work on something until it feels right to me. Until it feels like it came from me. Until it feels like it has that "Snowconesolid" type feeling to it. Not sure if this makes sense to anyone. But it does to me. I can't really explain it.

Anyway, I will probably end up making some kind of new horror game with my new characters and the donkey characters. I don't know yet. We will see how things go. But I am definitely in the mood for developing something new. I want to post a new "Making Of.." for my Ponytail character later on the blog. Which I will get to maybe later today or tomorrow.

Other Updates:

I also plan on posting a new video update soon. Maybe a new "Cookin Games" episode over on my channel showing off the new prototype demo in action and just to kind of reconnect with everyone who follows this blog and my youtube channel. So keep an eye out for that here on my channel

I also kind of feel like adding new content on my youtube channel. Stuff that is not really like developer updates or anything. I want to expand and get into new stuff. Not just game making all the time. Like I said earlier, I have a ton of unused 3d characters and props. I also have so much of my older 3d stuff from other projects that I could reuse. I don't know for sure yet, but maybe I will start doing animated short series and posting those to my youtube channel as well? We will see. It depends on if I get the time. So I am not making any promises yet.

Final piece of news. I haven't really said anything about this until now and I am not sure how much I can say about it so I won't get into too much detail until later on. But I finally signed with a publisher. I signed my previous game "Potato Thriller" with a publisher and they have a major update planned for it and everything so I am eventually going to go back and work on the update for PT and go live with it on Steam eventually. That is all I will say for now. I'll keep posting more updates here on the blog though.

Anyway, I have been keeping busy. I have a lot of new stuff that I am really looking forward to get working on and I can't share with all of you. Thanks everyone once again for all the support and stay awesome. More soon!

Release: Potato Thriller Steamed Potato Edition!!! Thank you.

It is finally here everyone! Potato Thriller has finally launched on Steam! The very special edition version of the game, "Potato Thriller Steamed Potato Edition" includes the full story mode from "Potato Thriller" and exclusive fresh content just for Steam.

You can check out the games official Steam page over here:

THANK YOU EVERYONE!
Thank You. I know I have said this a thousand times already; but I want to say it one last time because I truly mean it. Thank you everyone so much for your support and votes. My game would not be available on Steam today if it wasn't for you guys and your interest in my game. I honestly appreciate you all. I have been making games for a number of years now and this is the first time I ever get one of my own titles onto the Steam platform. When I first started making games long ago, the idea of having my content on such a platform never even came across my mind. I know this might not seem like a big deal to some people and most people are thinking "A lot of developers get their games on steam. So what?", However, to me it means so much. For me personally this is a big accomplishment and huge milestone as an indie game developer because, although I know I might not make the greatest games and sometimes my games can be very bizarre - creating worlds, characters, stories, video games, entertainment, is something that I am very passionate about and truly enjoy doing. And, the fact that I get to share my creations with you all just means the world to me. It motivates and inspires me to continue making games, improving  my skills to create better quality content and just keep doing my thing in general. For that I am very thankful and grateful to all of you who are interested in my work. Thank you everyone. More blog updates coming soon, more strange games coming soon and just more content in general. I'll keep creating. Stay awesome everyone.

Preparing for steam release and game updates!

Hi everyone. Quick update. Ever since Potato Thriller has been greenlit, I have been working non stop on it, adding new features, extra content and really polishing it up. I am currently prepping the final game for steam release which is something I am very very excited about. There are still a couple of things I need to do and finalize before getting it up on steam but i'm getting there. I am currently working on the steam page as we speak. My goal is to have the game up on steam within the next couple days or hopefully sooner. The game is finished. I have all the final builds ready and everything is going very smoothly. I have a small announcement about the steam version of the game that I would like to share real quick before I get back to work. Also I have some updates for the original game.

Steam Version:
As a way of showing my thanks and gratitude for having my game get greenlit, I wanted to make the steam version a little special. The steam version of Potato Thriller will have exclusive new extra content that the original game is missing and it will be listed under a slightly different name. On Steam, the game will be called: "Potato Thriller Steamed Potato Edition" as opposed to just the original "Potato Thriller. It is the same game but with the exclusive extra steam content. Here are some screens from the steamed potato edition:

Game updates:
There have been a couple of annoying bugs I noticed and have been pointed out to me in the original game that I released over at itch.io such as the mouse staying on screen or moving out of the game window, etc. I have fixed all these bugs and polished it up. The game is now the most recent updated game that will be the steam version, just without the exclusive extra steam content. So if you were one of the early buyers or purchased the game through the itch.io game page site, please download the newest updated game to get the best experience.

Now on Gamejolt:
The Game is now also available on gamejolt.com which also includes the most recent up to date build of the game.

Get Potato Thriller From:
GameJolt
itch.io
Steam special edition (Coming Soon)

Thank you everyone once again so much for all the support and voting for my game to become available through steam. I am really excited and looking forward to releasing the steam edition in the next couple days. More updates soon.

Potato Thriller GREENLIT! Thank you everyone!

Hey everyone, I know this is kind of late, I meant to get this post out earlier. Anyway, the other day was another regular day for me until I checked my email sometime in the afternoon. First thing I saw was an email from the steam store followed by "Congratulations, Potato Thriller..." then the email preview cuts off. Before I opened the full email I had a huge smile on my face and a really good feeling about what the email was about. I opened the full email and there it was. A message congratulating me saying that my game "Potato Thriller" has been greenlit on steam!

I couldn't believe it. It felt as if the email came out of nowhere. I wasn't expecting my game to just get greenlit on steam so suddenly. It was such a surprise to me because I have read numerous stories of indie game developers submitting their games to steam and waiting years to get greenlit.  I originally posted my game to steam on March 6th (on my birthday) and then two months later (May 27th) the game gets greenlit. Only two months! Its crazy. To be honest, somewhere in those two months came a point where I even lost hope that my game would ever make it on steam. But now I am sitting in front of my computer staring at the steam page with the satisfying green banner that says "This game has been Greenlit by the Community"

"The Community", all of you guys on steam. You voted for it. You made this happen. For that, I am very  thankful. I truly appreciate all of the support you guys have given the game. Thank you for taking the time to come in and check it out. Thank you for being interested in my game and leaving comments.  You are all awesome. I honestly can't thank you all enough.

I have been making games for years now but "Potato Thriller" is the very first game that I have submitted to Steam and having a game available on Steam is a dream come true for small time indie developers such as myself. As a game developer this is a very big milestone for me.

I honestly appreciate all the support  that you guys have given me. Thank you for making this possible.

More updates coming very soon.

Potato Thriller Releases Tomorrow (April 1st, 2016)

I mentioned in a previous announcement that the game was near complete and my estimated release date was going to be at the end of March. March is over now and I never released the game. I was running through the game one last time to clean up any missed bugs and so on.

Anyway, the game is fully completed now and ready to be released. I plan on releasing this game sometime tomorrow, April 1st, 2016. Probably sometime in the afternoon. It will become available over at itch.io and maybe other indie gaming sites in the future.

What bout steam brah?

This game hasn't even been up for a full month yet on Steam so it might be awhile before it gets green-lit. I have a finished game and I want to get it out, so I am not exactly waiting for it to be green-lit before I release it. If it does get green-lit down the road that would be awesome. Thank you to all of you who have voted Yes for this game and are interested in it. In the future maybe Potato Thriller will make the Greenlight. Until then, the game will be available on other sites. I will keep you all updated if that happens.

More updates soon.

Estimated release date? This Month.

Hello everyone. Wanted to post a quick update for the game. I am currently finalizing "Potato Thriller"  Putting the last bits together and everything and then doing a quick polish job. Currently, I am aiming on finishing and having the entire game released before the end of this month.

As of this post, my game hasn't even been posted to Steam Greenlight for a full month. You might be thinking "He just recently posted this and now he is saying that it is almost complete?".

Actually, I have been working on this game since October 2015. So it has been a couple months. Although it is a pretty silly, random game horror game that many people might not take seriously - I did actually put in a lot of work into creating this. This isn't a game that I just did overnight. Anyway, I wanted to wait until I had just the right amount completed before I posted it to Steam.

I posted this game to Steam Greenlight on March 6th (my birthday). Obviously it still did not get greenlit. Of course I wasn't expecting it to get greenlit in one month. This is my first time posting something to steam and I did read prior that it could take a while for games to get greenlit on steam and in some cases even years. I read about this one developer who said that after about 4 or so years, he finally was informed that his game was greenlit and ready to get published on Steam. And I get it. I understand that the process can take a while. New games are posted to Steam daily. Deciding what gets Greenlit and what does not is probably a very time consuming process.

Anyway, since I am nearly complete with this project, my goal is to have the entire game finished and released before the end of this month. No estimated release date yet but, definitely sometime before the end of March. Greenlit on Steam or not. I will have this game finished and released real soon. While we wait for the Greenlight on Steam, I will have the game available (once completed) on sites like itch.io and maybe a couple others. I'll get more into this later on when I am preparing for release.

Anyway, this is all for now. Thanks for reading. Thank you for those of you who have voted for the game so far on Steam and more updates coming soon. Real soon. Peace.

If interested (and this will probably be the last time I post this link) go vote for the game on steam over here:
