November Mini Direct Recap: A look into the secret tech behind Samer Khatib Games

In today's mini direct, we take you behind the scenes to show a glimpse of the secret tech that will be used in upcoming games from Snowconesolid Productions. "Advanced Samer 3D Imaging" or "AS3I" is a process that allows us to render the NEW 3D Signature Samer Style in real-time.

The "3D Signature Samer Style" or "3DSSS" refers to a unique 3D graphical art style that can only be found in works produced by Snowconesolid Productions studio This graphical look has been in development since Giraffe Town was in production & has taken nearly 2 years to perfect.

The goal from the get-go has always been to create a unique signature look that differentiates Snowconesolid Productions games from other games. A style that can't be easily replicated. Esp in real-time. Our secret weapon? The 3DSSS.

Quality. Presentation. The 2 most important principles at Snowconesolid Productions. More than just a graphical look. 3DSSS is a technical marvel. Using AS3I, we are able to render thousands of objects in real-time. The gif below is inaccurate due to compression and having to be optimized in gif format. The scene showcased below runs at a stable 60+fps in real-time.

All upcoming games use AS3I & 3DSSS with the exception of Samer Hills: Toxic Turtle. This game began development in the middle of all this and uses 2.5 Gen Samer Tech (which is a mix of giraffe town style & 3DSSS).

Pre Potato Thriller games: Gen 0
Potato Thriller: Gen 1
Giraffe Town: Gen 2
The Debug: Gen 2.5
Samer Hills Toxic Turtle: Gen 2.5
All other upcoming and new Samer Hills titles & Samer Khatib's labeled games: Gen 3

Did you enjoy this behind the scenes look at the top-secret tech & a tiny glimpse into the future of games from Snowconesolid Productions? Thanks for tuning into today's Samer Mini Direct. Check back soon for more. Lot's of cool things to come!

Valve Killing Greenlight...

Hello everyone. This is kind of a surprise post, but I just had to take the time to write about this news. If you are an indie game developer and plan on submitting your game to Steam GreenLight then you might want to hurry up and do so quickly. I am sure many developers using the platform or want to use the platform have heard the news already, but if you have not this is whats going on - Valve is shutting down Steam Greenlight for good.

Source - From Valve themselves:
http://steamcommunity.com/games/announcements/evolvingsteam

Almost every other major gaming site has also covered this already such as kotaku and Polygon
I am sure that many YouTubers will also probably discuss this soon enough as well.

Anyway, Valve is shutting down Steam Greenlight and plans to replace it with something called "Steam Direct". This will be the new program that indie developers will need to go through if they want to make their games available on the Steam platform. Valve didn't release much information on the new submission process and it seems that most of the plans aren't finalized yet but if you are an indie developer hoping to get onto the platform there could be some things to be worried about. For example, it only cost $100 dollars to sign up as a developer for Steam Greenlight. This was a one time submission fee that allowed you to submit as many games as you wanted. Steam Direct aims to remove this and it sounds like Valve will be charging a fee per submission. There is no official price setup for the new fee as of this writing. Valve will be sharing more information about the new process later on.

For more information and questions not answered in Valve's news update I recommend checking out this topic about the upcoming changes in the Greenlight community forums:

Changes coming to Steam Greenlight

According to this post, if you are a Greenlight developer and still have not submit anything, you may request a refund.

For those of you interested in submitting to Greenlight, there is still time and you can do so. If you get greenlit before the changes are made, then it's safe to say that you will be able to release your game on Steam without having to go through Steam Direct or paying another fee price. However, if your game is still hanging in Greenlight by the time Steam Direct takes over, then you will have to resubmit and possibly pay a fee based on the new on-boarding process.

indies worried....

If you are an indie developer don't worry, you will still be able to bring your product to Steam even after Greenlight is taken down. However, if you are worried, it is understandable. Actually, after reading through the comments and seeing what other developers have to said expresses that many other small time indies are worried.  I personally am worried myself since I am an indie game developer who currently has been through Greenlight once already and planned on submitting more games through it in the future. Actually, I was planning my second Greenlight campaign for my next upcoming game. The game I have been talking about for months now here on the blog. This news about Greenlight shutting down has got me so worried, that I might even launch my next Greenlight campaign sometime next week hoping that it will get green-lit and reserve me a launch spot on Steam before the big changes happen. It might become harder to get on Steam's platform. I don't know yet. We will see.

Once again, don't get too worried. Valve themselves still haven't really given any final answers on how the new changes will work, how much it will cost etc. In the meantime, it is probably best to submit your game to Greenlight before it's completely gone.

This news isn't all bad. Valve is obviously doing this in the best interest of their customers and developers. This is a new way to add in some sort of new level of quality control. Steam Direct could mean less poorly designed, broken unfinished games and more quality content for people to buy.

I will most likely be posting an update about my current game project within the next week or so.

What's beyond these vast virtual worlds?

Absolutely nothing. Video games are all lies and illusions. The curse of learning how to create and design your own video games is that it takes the magic away. As a little kid I always liked to imagine and think that there where places beyond the in game worlds that you could explore. Areas that are hidden. There is this sense of curiosity when you are thrown into a big game world for the first time to explore for yourself.

You look at high mountains and think to yourself "is anything on the other side. Can I climb up those mountains and see what is behind them?" Later you find out that it is nearly impossible to get even half way up these in game mountains. That is because they are designed to act as game barriers to prevent the player from going beyond the boundaries of the game world. Why? Because there is nothing left in the game world to see. There is nothing behind those mountains except for an empty infinite space that will just go on forever and ever. Those mountains aren't even modeled/detailed from the backsides most times. They are just awkwardly cut and empty and you could see through them if you look at them from that side.

But the player never sees the other side of the mountain. Because the player isn't meant to see the other side of the mountain. That would ruin the experience and break the immersion for the player. The game developer on the other hand sees the game from every single possible angle. They are the ones putting it together after all. The game world starts out as this empty blank space that is then filled up by the developer to create this illusion that this tiny little world has some sort of life to it. But the developer knows that its all illusion. The game world is all fake. So the magic and excitement of being able to imagine that there is something more there is none existent to the developer.

Back to my earlier point, as a kid I would spend hours in front of my TV screen with my N64 constantly playing Zelda Ocarina Of Time. I was fully immersed in the game world and I always wondered if there was anything beyond Hyrule. Was there even a way to get out of Hyrule? The game felt so magical to me. I was sitting in my tiny bed room, yet I was exploring this huge lifelike world through my TV screen. I eventually learned about a glitch that lets you go past the boundaries of Hyrule. There was this area in the Hyrule castle section of the game. If you angled and positioned Link just right, you could have Link walk up this area that is not meant to be a walk-able area for the player. It was designed as a barrier to hide the ugly truth of what is behind the beautiful game world.

I climbed this area over and over again and Link constantly fell back down to Hyrule grounds because of the game physics as if the game was trying to tell me "No! you aren't suppose to see what is beyond this point! You can't go here!" (it was a pretty hard glitch to do) Determined to see what was beyond these flat mountains, I finally got to the top. What I saw when I got to the top broke me. As a child, I was crushed. There was nothing behind these mountains. I could see the games skybox moving around. Rotating almost as if someone glued a picture of clouds on this cylinder shaped lamp shade. I looked down from those mountains only to see a dark empty void of nothing. I could see other parts of Hyrule castle rendering out from the distance, but everything was flat. There was nothing at all. I moved Link forward and he fell out of the game world into the empty dark square pit of darkness. He fell endlessly. I could see Hyrule castle and the rest of the game world start to disappear because of how far Link fell.

Everything in the game just felt so fake at that point. I felt like someone just took Link and put him on this movie set with all these fake props. Video games have been ruined for me ever since I had this traumatic experience as a kid. I never looked at them the same. The magic was gone forever...

Of course, I am only joking about how this ruined video games for me. Actually, when I saw this I was like "woah cool! This is so awesome!" because it gave me an idea of how games are made. It let me see for the first time ever a more "behind the scenes" look at video games instead of just seeing the game world for what it was suppose to be seen as and to me that was super interesting. I actually tried to see if I could glitch out of other parts of the game later on. And I think this is something that all gamers try experimenting with as well. They try to break the game, they see if they could create a situation or do something in the game that wasn't intended for the player to do. I have even seen some people trying to do this with my own game before such as "Potato Thriller" and I think it is hilarious. Watching someone else do that to your own game is very cool actually. Because its like "hey thats not what I wanted you to do. No! you aren't suppose to go there! you aren't following my game rules! I knew I should of blocked off this area..." So it is really interesting to see someone essentially rebel against the rules of the game world you created. You see the player play your game in a completely unexpected way and that is because they are curious to see what lies beyond. That, or they just really want to break the game because of how board they got from playing by your rules. But either way, it is really cool to see and a great feeling.

I am starting to just ramble and even switch topics at this point so I will end this on a short note. In all seriousness, if you are thinking about becoming a developer, going into game design, learning how to make games, becoming an indie dev, doing it as a hobby, working in games in a professional AAA studios, etc. I say go for it! Learning about how game worlds are created, what goes into them, how they work, etc - is all very very interesting stuff to read up on. It is very fascinating to see the hard work behind everything. I always loved seeing behind he scenes stuff in movies and games more than the actual game, movie, etc itself.  Seeing the tricks used to create an illusion for a certain moment or scene in any kind of medium is really satisfying because you have that moment of "ahhh! that is how it was done. I was wondering how they did this". You then have that realization that you could do something similar. It is a very awesome feeling to be able to create your own games and share those experiences with others. I forgot where I heard this saying but it went something like this: "It's fun to play video games, but it is even more fun to make video games."

PS: This is the first blog post I do in a long long time that isn't about me or the current game project I am working on. It feels nice to change things up every once in a while. I might do more posts like this in the future. Definitely more development blogs on the new game coming up as well.

More updates coming soon!

His name is "PonyTail"

Today I wan't to talk a little bit more about the main character of my next game "Samer Hills" and reveal some more information on the game. This is a character I created a while back and even posted a "making of" section here on the blog which you could find here: "Making of PonyTail"

His name is Ponytail. Why? because he has a ponytail. (I am very good at naming my characters)

The information that follows in the rest of this post are considered minor spoilers for my own game. But knowing me, I am terrible at keeping quiet about my work and just can't keep things secret. Also, I really enjoy sharing each step of the development process here on the blog.

So anyway Ponytail is the main character in "Samer Hills" - a chubby, mustached pink wearing stylized comical character who sports a ponytail hair style. I have always enjoyed games that are closely connected with their characters and show how their characters evolve throughout the game as the player advances deeper into the story. This is what I want to achieve with "Samer Hills". The game itself will really be focused around this character.

A couple days ago I posted this picture on my twitter saying "brothers or same person?" And right now is the time where I begin to give away minor spoilers for the game. So the bearded man is actually the same character as the original pink wearing Ponytail character. As I was just saying, this game will focus on the main character and his evolution throughout. At the start of the game you are this worn down big bearded crazy looking guy who looks like he has had a pretty tough life. As you progress more and more you get see how he changes.

Eventually Ponytail looses the beard, gets a cleaner look and begins wearing this pink uniform (which will also be explained more in the game) The character himself is going to be a very strange and questionable character. If he is good, bad, crazy, sad, etc is really going to be left up to the player to decide.

This game is all about character building. I think that Ponytail is going to be a really unique complex character to play as and will make the game an interesting experience. I am working my best to deliver this experience as it will be the first time where I make a game that focuses on building who that character is instead of focusing on the game world and its enemies. Of course the game world and other characters will contribute to the main character as well. As always, it will turn out to be a really weird game but I am really excited to share it with everyone once its done and then maybe what I am saying now will make a little bit more sense once people have actually got to play it.

More updates coming soon!

Release: Potato Thriller Steamed Potato Edition!!! Thank you.

It is finally here everyone! Potato Thriller has finally launched on Steam! The very special edition version of the game, "Potato Thriller Steamed Potato Edition" includes the full story mode from "Potato Thriller" and exclusive fresh content just for Steam.

You can check out the games official Steam page over here:

THANK YOU EVERYONE!
Thank You. I know I have said this a thousand times already; but I want to say it one last time because I truly mean it. Thank you everyone so much for your support and votes. My game would not be available on Steam today if it wasn't for you guys and your interest in my game. I honestly appreciate you all. I have been making games for a number of years now and this is the first time I ever get one of my own titles onto the Steam platform. When I first started making games long ago, the idea of having my content on such a platform never even came across my mind. I know this might not seem like a big deal to some people and most people are thinking "A lot of developers get their games on steam. So what?", However, to me it means so much. For me personally this is a big accomplishment and huge milestone as an indie game developer because, although I know I might not make the greatest games and sometimes my games can be very bizarre - creating worlds, characters, stories, video games, entertainment, is something that I am very passionate about and truly enjoy doing. And, the fact that I get to share my creations with you all just means the world to me. It motivates and inspires me to continue making games, improving  my skills to create better quality content and just keep doing my thing in general. For that I am very thankful and grateful to all of you who are interested in my work. Thank you everyone. More blog updates coming soon, more strange games coming soon and just more content in general. I'll keep creating. Stay awesome everyone.

Preparing for steam release and game updates!

Hi everyone. Quick update. Ever since Potato Thriller has been greenlit, I have been working non stop on it, adding new features, extra content and really polishing it up. I am currently prepping the final game for steam release which is something I am very very excited about. There are still a couple of things I need to do and finalize before getting it up on steam but i'm getting there. I am currently working on the steam page as we speak. My goal is to have the game up on steam within the next couple days or hopefully sooner. The game is finished. I have all the final builds ready and everything is going very smoothly. I have a small announcement about the steam version of the game that I would like to share real quick before I get back to work. Also I have some updates for the original game.

Steam Version:
As a way of showing my thanks and gratitude for having my game get greenlit, I wanted to make the steam version a little special. The steam version of Potato Thriller will have exclusive new extra content that the original game is missing and it will be listed under a slightly different name. On Steam, the game will be called: "Potato Thriller Steamed Potato Edition" as opposed to just the original "Potato Thriller. It is the same game but with the exclusive extra steam content. Here are some screens from the steamed potato edition:

Game updates:
There have been a couple of annoying bugs I noticed and have been pointed out to me in the original game that I released over at itch.io such as the mouse staying on screen or moving out of the game window, etc. I have fixed all these bugs and polished it up. The game is now the most recent updated game that will be the steam version, just without the exclusive extra steam content. So if you were one of the early buyers or purchased the game through the itch.io game page site, please download the newest updated game to get the best experience.

Now on Gamejolt:
The Game is now also available on gamejolt.com which also includes the most recent up to date build of the game.

Get Potato Thriller From:
GameJolt
itch.io
Steam special edition (Coming Soon)

Thank you everyone once again so much for all the support and voting for my game to become available through steam. I am really excited and looking forward to releasing the steam edition in the next couple days. More updates soon.

New Vlog series - "Cookin Games"

Hello everyone. For many years I have been posting updates about my game projects and random stuff here on my blog in written format. However, vlogging (video blogs) have been around for quite a while now and is a pretty popular format especially for youtubers and even gamers.

I believe that people like visual stuff. We enjoy actually seeing and hearing about things more then just reading text silently in our heads (I know that I am definitely a more visual type person) so I decided to create a new video series called "Cookin Games" and all this is, is just me rambling on and talking about my projects and sometimes even off topic random stuff. Its kind of like a blog podcast with a visual element in the background. So as I commentate in the background, footage of something I created like a early prototype from a game or project I am working will  also be shown. So with these two very important elements (Visual) + (audio) I think a much more special experience is created then reading text off of a blog.

My goal with this series is to showcase some of my newest work and discuss and share it with you guys and hopefully even entertain and interact with those of you who are watching or leave feedback in the comments section.

This is something that I have been planning on doing for a while now. Becoming more active on my youtube channel. So I look forward to creating more dev vlog videos and sharing. As for this blog, I am not replacing this blog with my youtube channel. I will continue to post updates on here as well of course. :)

I have just uploaded the very first episode. You can check it out here:

I am not really much of a youtuber and don't really have high expectations or am aiming to build like a giant youtube channel with tons of subscribers. Thats not the case at all. I just thought this would be a fun way of better interacting and posting updates. Creating silly indie games is my main thing. Apologies for the constant "umms" and "ahhhs" and sometimes long pauses. Still new to the vlogging thing. Hopefully I will improve at it.

What happened to Potato Thriller for steam?
I did not forget about this. Actually, getting my recently greenlit game Potato Thriller released on Steam is my primary focus at the moment. I have been working on it. It is all I have been working on. I am working on an updated version for steam and adding extra content and stuff to it because I want the steam edition to be special and cool. I will have more updates on that in the next blog post. I actually recorded and created the very first episode of this new vlog series about a week before Potato Thriller was greenlit on steam. So I thought I would just upload this real quick to kick off the series then get back to work on PT. But I will have more updates about that in the next post. Thanks everyone once again and more soon to come.

Fake websites stealing stuff from my game and other indies...

Hey everyone. Just wanted to post a quick blog update to let people know about some very shady game websites that steal from indie game developers for their own benefit.

I recently found my newest game "Potato Thriller" on several different online gaming websites. However, the thing is, its not my game. Websites such as v3arcade.org, pokionline.com, 8iz.com and many many more shady looking online sites steal graphics and images from indie game developers work and then use the same exact name as the title for their crappy game that they are hosting on their website (which is probably also stolen) to confuse people into thinking that the that is the actual game from the developer when in reality its not. They do this to attract traffic to their own websites so they can get their ads clicked and make their money. Which by the way, these sites are very very spammy. They have ads everywhere, like the ones that say "congratulations you are the 1000000 visitor click to claim prize" or "download this software" etc, annoying pop-ups and just not a very cool website at all. These are the kind of websites that will probably give your computer a virus. So, its best to stay away from places like these.

Not cool....

And Just look at how they make up some BS description for my game and other games:

Potato Thriller is an online Horror game that you can play for free here at Poki Games Online. This game is one of our featured games with a rating of 8 / 10 (from 1 ratings). Potato Thriller is one of the many Horror games that we feature. In the mood for more like this, then check out Potato the Destroyer or Just Potato. To play even more poki games, go on over to the all time top games page.

No... just stop. This is not cool. Not cool at all....

And, its not only my game, they steal stuff from other indie game developers and host on their site as their own. For example, "Emily wants to play" - This game has become a pretty well known and successful indie horror game for PC that is available on Steam. But again, these spammy websites take the name and images from the actual games and use that to market their own crappy games.

Some other indie games they stole from:

So if anyone goes to these websites thinking that these are the actual games that indie developers created, just know that they are not.

Anyway, I just wanted to let people know about this because someone needs to say something. I was actually a bit disappointed to see this. This is not cool at all. And I am not just speaking for my game, I want to let other indie game developers know about this as well because they worked hard on their games and to have some spammy website just take from that hard work and use it to advertise their own site is just like a huge slap across the face.

I have never heard of these websites and am in no way affiliated with them. I'm sure the other indie developers whos games are supposedly on here also have nothing to do with these websites.

Potato Thriller is not an online game that you could play in your browser. Potato Thriller is currently only available for Windows pc and Mac, at the moment. Potato Thriller is currently only available on itch and you can check it out here:

https://snowconesolid.itch.io/potato-thriller

I am working on getting it on other platforms and game websites and will post updates when I have more news. It will only be available at places I say it will be on this blog or on my twitter.

Thanks for reading. More updates soon.
