current Moonlight Mountains changes and a Reboot to the game

I have done a lot of work on my project Moonlight mountains since the last post and I have a lot to talk about. But I have been updating my dev thread about it on the unity forums HERE often.

anyway first things first, I have a new vision for moonlight mountains and decided to make a huge jump. I already pretty much said everything in my recent update on my unity thread so I will just copy and paste that here since i am lazy:

//from my recent post on my unity dev thread:

When I made the original commander moonlight and those other models I did not really have a clear idea of what I wanted moonlight mountains to be. than as I started making the levels, more and more things started to come together and a bunch of different ideas were emerging.

Now pretty much I have completed the entire game. I have been doing a lot of thinking after I remodeled the original Commander Moonlight and thought to myself that the entire game could be much better. The levels, enemies, etc they have not turned out to be exactly what I wanted them to be.

I decided that I want to make moonlight mountains all over again from the beginning. I will start a new fresh Moonlight mountains project that will be everything I wanted this original moonlight mountains to be. I think the current moonlight mountains is a great game I made and I learned so much more about unity from making it but I could of made it much better.

but what about the original project? I am not just going to abandon this one. actually I have maybe about one more scene and a half to make and then this moonlight mountains will be 100% complete. And already I have made a good amount of improvements to this version. Originally I was planning on releasing this project on Desura as a really cheap game, but now I have decided to release it for free. Im going to finish this one and have it out in perhaps the next week or so.

I have a new vision for Moonlight Mountains, so when I make the next moonlight mountains its not going to be a remake of this moonlight mountains, the gameplay will be different, it will have a different story and the entire game will be fresh. Think of this current moonlight mountains project I will release soon as the first entry in the series
this way I can get feedback on my original idea and see what I should improve/ inherit for my true moonlight mountains project

I look forward to releasing this version soon. I know the graphics are not to good but I think you will enjoy the game.

I will have more soon!

oh yeah and I have added to the name of this version of moonlight mountains. Now I call it
"Moonlight Mountains : First Discovery"

//// Back to the blog

Anyway thats what I have planned for the current moonlight mountains project and the future moonlight mountains project. Also as I mentioned in my unity post and my recent unity thread updates I have re-made the main character and I love the new design. I was going to replace the current commander moonlight with this one but than I thought if I am making a completely new moonlight mountains game I will save my new commander moonlight for that project. Here is some pics of the new Commander Moonlight, there is a huge difference and a lot of improvements:

here is a shadeless version for you if the others where too shiny looking :)

Now back to this current moonlight mountains project heres a couple of things that I have done since the last time I posted on my blog

+ There is now a Ammo system, the game is more challenging and is more like a survival type game now

+ Made some graphical changes to the game, some objects and enviorments look better, also the moonlight mountain bear is different now

+ Added a new type of enemy that allows you to attack multiple parts of the body, its a more advanced enemy. Heres a pic, I call it the Moon-Knight

+ and I recently have created a save/load type system to the game, im really happy about this because now the game just feels more professional :) heres a video of the save load feature in action:

Also I have uploaded a bunch of other videos for this game project recently so if you want to check them out go to my youtube channel HERE

Thats all I have for now. I will finish creating "Moonlight Mountains : First Discovery" and release it for free really soon! :)

KokohGear : Meal Full version Released

just released my final version of my game project.

my post from my unity dev thread:

Hey everyone this is the last post for my game project. Just came to say that the full final version of my game is now out and can be played for free over here:

KokohGear : Meal Final Version

Although I have done some other tiny projects in unity, this game project is my first true full game project. The ones in the past are more test/ training with unity projects. Of course this one was also a training with unity project for me as well.
I have learned a lot more about unity in the time I created this game and hope to expand my knowledge even more in the future.

Anyway I hope you enjoy my game. :)

you can see my dev thread here to see how the game flowed through development

Starting Over

Recently when I was updating my version of unity something went wrong and all of my scenes, assests and scripts got deleted. So everything is pretty much gone. Im not sure when I will make Episode two of kokoh trails anymore. I might not work on it for a while.Anyway, on the bright side, everything in my unity project folders is nice and cleaned up now. Before it was a mess and everything was disorganized. :)

At the moment I am working on a new game project. I decided to make this next game really simple. I am planning on re-using a lot of the models I made for Kokoh trails as well as maybe make some new ones. I might add some new animations and try to update the textures to look better (I am not that great at texturing). This next game I am working on is going to be a very simple top down styled game. I have recently created a very basic prototype for this game to test out the gameplay. I might upload the prototype soon, but there really isn't much to it. In the actual game I will try to add more things to gameplay. My goal for this game is to create an experience that is similar to an addicting simple mobile type game people would play on iphone and android.

Recently I have created a profile on http://www.kongregate.com/ and I plan on uploading my games on there because that site supports uploading unity games which is pretty cool IMO. Also its a pretty good website because you can get feedback on your game there from tons of users. You check  out my profile on Kongregate here http://www.kongregate.com/accounts/Snowconesolid

My next game project will be my first Kongregate game I publish. I am looking forward to it. :)

I will have more information on it later on.

Kokoh Trails: Leonardo's Memory Episode 1 Finally Up!

Hi everyone! In my last blog post I said that I would upload a demo of "kokoh Trails Leonardo's Memory", my very first unity game project. I said that I would upload everything that I have built so far and then begin to focus on my new game project and take a break from the kokoh trails project. Well, after looking at the demo I was putting together for my first project, I have realized that it is very boring. So instead I decided to finish everything in the first part of my game. I created the boss battle and the parts for after the boss battle.

So, this is no longer a demo, it is a final build of the very first part of Kokoh Trails: Leonardo's Memory. I decided that im going to build each part of my game separately. So I am going to continue working on my Kokoh Trails project as well as my second game project at the same time. Its not a good idea to work on both at them at the same time because I am a solo dev and it is a lot of work for one person, so I am going to switch back and fourth between the two.

About Episodes:
For kokoh Trails Leonardo's Memory I am going to create each episode and release it separately instead of just working on one huge game. I have just finished episode one and now episode one of kokoh Trails Leonardo's memory is finally up. I hope you enjoy the game. I would like some feed back on the game to.
The game is defiantly not perfect. The textures are kind of crappy and the animations aren't to well done.

Any way here is a screen shot of "A Samer Khatib game" (You will see this screen in all my games)

Heres a screen shot of the main menu for episode one

And here is the very first Episode of "Kokoh Trails: Leonardo's Memory"
hope you enjoy it!

New video of Leonardo's Memory and Demo coming soon

It has been a long time since I last updated my blog but I am here once again. *audience clap in background* ahh yes thank you thank you. Anyway I have just posted a new video of "Kokoh Trails : Leonardo's Memory", my very first unity game project (or first game project ever). In my last blog post I said that I was abandoning the project for a while and might or might not finish working on it. Also, I said that I started a new game project. Anyway, since I have been gone I was working on my new game project the whole time. I have made very good progress on it so far and it has come much further in development than Kokoh Trails has. I have already built the first two levels in my new game project and am about start working on the third level. I have planned and organized my new game project much better than I have for my first one. For Kokoh Trails, I was kind of just making everything at random and did not organize anything of my project stuff like scripts and models and what goes into what level, etc. So I guess I just became overwhelmed with what to do. Luckily this is not the case in my new game project. Everything is organized and I am planning on what to do for each level before I go in and start building it. So development has been coming along very nicely. Anyway this post is not about my new game project. I will be posting news and finally some screens and all the details about my new game project really soon though. Next blog post.
Anyway, this blog is for kokoh trails. I have just put up a new video for kokoh trails up showing off final build of the very first level. Check it out.

Also, I plan on putting up a web demo of everything I have created for my kokoh Trails game project. I would really like to know what people think of it so far. So just some feed back would be nice, even though there really isn't much to do in the parts of the game I have created so far. Once again, I am not sure if I will ever go back and finish this game. I have also put up images of some of the 3d models I made for this game on my deviantart page. Right now I am fully focused my new game project. Maybe after finishing that I will go back to working on my first project. As for the web player; I am very impressed with it. I know unity can do a lot of things but I have never made a web player build until recently. Games run great in unity's web player and  it just makes me want to make even more games because there is no download required.
So plus one for the unity game engine for having an option to build in web players. To test out the web player, I created a very small basic game to see how well it works. Its nothing special at all. You play as a ball and collide with boxes to destroy them. There is no sound, awsome 3d models or cool texturing or anything but if interested you can check that out over here, bam!

just use the arrow keys to move around. If you fall of the stage, then refresh the page because I never added a respawn thing, so you would just fall forever.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50235309/WebPlayerTest/WebPlayer.html

So I really like the web player and hope to make all my games in it in the future. Like I said earlier, I will post a demo build of all the stuff I created so far in my kokoh trails project in the web player. After that, there will be no more updates on that project for a while and I will start posting updates on my new project. I look forward to it. Thanks for reading!

Off Topic:
I drew a picture of something completely random; I have no idea what it is. So I decided that I will make this creature thing my mascot. Here is the official Snowconesolid video game icon from now on.

A new Game project.

I have been working on a game for over a month now and after all that work I did, I have realized that I am loosing interest more and more in my project. I said that I would finish the game, but i'm just not motivated to do anymore work for it. I discussed a little bit about it, you play as a character named Leonardo who is found washed up on the shores of Kehkoh Island with no previous memory. The story of the game was suppose to unwrap even more later on as the player went through a very zelda like adventure. I never said the name of the game on my blog, but originally I was going to call it "Kokoh Trails: Leonardo's Memory".  Here is a picture of the main title screen/ cover art/what ever its called.
I actually drew this picture very early on when I first started creating the game but never posted it, so its pretty old. I tried to draw it in a very old fashioned Japanese painting type art style :)

There is actually a lot of things I have created for that game but never posted anything about them. I only posted small updates on here. In the future i'll upload other things from this game that I have made to use as assets like more art work, 3d models, characters, and music for the game. Ill probably post them on here as well as my deviantart page. I made a lot of music for this project but never used any of  them. I might use them for other projects. Maybe in the future, if I ever get interest in this project again I will pick it up and try to finish it, but for now i'm going to take a break from it.

But wait! That does not mean I am not working on anything anymore. I just started my new game project last week :)
I decided that I wanted to make a more simple game than "Kokoh Trails: Leonardo's Memory". I think that my new idea is actually much better than the game I was first working on. The story is much more simpler, but I think its really good so far. As for gameplay, I want to try to make my own unique type. I have an idea of how its going to play out as. I got some inspiration for my new game from persona 2 and 3 (just the art style though, the game itself is going to be nothing like the persona games, those are way to complex for a solo dev.)

So far the current progress on my new project is pretty decent. Besides some sketches, I have already made the main character and created all of the animations. Also I just recently finished the main villain. In the near future I will post a lot more information about my new game. Since this game is simpler I will update much quicker. Unlike the project I just abandoned (temporarily) I am very excited about this one.

New Update - Its been a while.

Allo there again. It has been a while since my last blog post. I don't really have as much time anymore to work on my game because school opened back up again. I started this project over winter break, so I have been able to work on it as long as I wanted to, but now I don't really have as much free time. However! I shall make sure this game is finished! I will not let this project die out.

I have updated the game a little bit since my last blog post, but only added some small things.
So here is just some new small updates on my game along with some new screenshots. I hope you enjoy!

I have added an awsome GUI or HUD to my game.

Up in the top left corner of the screen where it says "Leonardo", is going to be the health bar. Also at the bottom right and left of the screen is the HUD for camera control and player movement. Besides basic GUI stuff in the game, I also wanted to put something that would tell the player where they are in the game, so in the top right of the screen is the players Current Location. In each level the Current location tells you which island you are in. So just some simple GUI stuff.

Also in the picture, if you look near the red house, you can see a character wearing purple. This is a new character that I made. This characters name is Keshko, Keshko is one of the residents of the island.

Another small feature added is the use of signs. Yep a very basic element in all games. Just walk up to a sign and read what it says, the sign will tell you whats ahead or whos house that is.

So nothing to exciting at the moment, but I believe that my game is getting better and better. :)

There is one thing I did not mention, today I actually created the very first boss in my game. I just finished modeling, texturing, rigging and animating it a couple minuets ago.
I didn't want to post anything about this boss because I wanted it to be a surprise, but I guess ill go ahead and reveal it now anyway.

so here it is everyone, the very first boss you battle in my game!

The name of this boss is going to be "KokohCreep".
Description, a creepy Kokohnut type creature that resides on Kehkoh Island.
Do not steal its kokohnuts.

Here is a short video of KokohCreep in movement. So far he only has one animation, which is a creepy walk animation. I'm not sure if I will give him more animations later on.

More updates coming soon. Thanks for reading. :)

Update - Finished the house level

Just a quick update, I just finished the house level 100% and now its ready to be put into place after the introduction level. The house level is the very first real level where the game starts off. It is a very small and simple level. I wasn't expecting to make a very big script, but I ended up having to write this huge script in order to do everything I wanted to do in that level. I spent a lot more time than I was expecting but its finally finished and i'm very happy with the end results.  And now I am finally ready to begin working on the level after the house level, which is the island. About 75 % of the island level is already finished I would say. Thats stuff like the level design, the 3d models, the animations, and everything is placed where it is needed to be placed.
So now I just need to work on more of the scripting parts for the game and set the order of when events will happen and such.
I also still need to work on other things like GUI, more 2d images for things like character interactions, and other basic things like a health system. More updates soon! :)

Update Current Progress (First part of game, Cutscenes, and some more info on story)

I am almost finished working on the very first part of my game.
I have just finished working on the opening for the beginning of the the game yesterday and now I'm working on the starting point of the game, which is inside of Leonardo's house.

Screen Shot of inside Leonardo's House

All the cut scenes I am making in the game are hand drawn comic book styled.I will tell the story through these 2d cutscenes and leave the gameplay 3d. So it is similar to MGS peace walker for example, 2d comic book cutscenes and then 3d gameplay.

Here is a screen shot of one of the very first cutscene images.

This screen shot is part of the opening of the game.
The opening of the game will explain Leonardo's arrival on the island a bit more.

The background image on my blog is also from the opening cutscene in my game :)
You will learn more about that character(The one holding the coconuts) later on.

Whats next?
I still need to work on more gameplay, more scripts, some more 3d modeling/texturing/animating and GUI as well as more 2d images for cutscenes.
More updates coming soon in the future.

Hopefully I will have a trailer up soon once I finish the first part of my game.

Just finished designing the very first level of my game!!! (Screens)

Finally after days and days of 3d modeling, texturing, rigging and animating I have finally finished designing the very first level of my game. I have created a whole Island. You will learn more about this island in the future. I am still not going to be getting into to much details about my game yet because I really want the game to be a surprise.

But I cannot resist! I need to just talk a little about it! Before I do, I have decided to post two screen shots of my game. So finally here is the first appearance of my game.

There it is! well some of it at least. Ok now let me talk about the screen shots and reveal some information about the game. In the screenshots that is not the whole island, that part of the game is only part of the island. The Island is actually much much bigger.

More info on the island in the future, for now lets discuss the characters in the screenshots. First the bird like creature. When I was designing the island I really wanted my own creatures to be in it, so I decided to create a bird type creature.

I have named this bird creature a "Kokohgear"
I named it Kokohgear because of its gear shaped tail. This birds most distinctive feature is the tail and as you can see I made the tail look very gear shaped. (I was just randomly 3d modeling and somehow ended up giving it a gear shaped tail)

These birds are very friendly harmless creatures and are very common on the island you start off on, they inhibit it.

The character in the yellow shirt standing with all the kokohgear is actually the main character for the game.
I have named him "Leonardo" ( I don't know why)
Leonardo lives on this island and has a story.
I don't want to say what the story is about, but throughout the game Leonardo is on a quest that is not related to the story, but at the same time as the player goes through this off topic quest, Leonardo begins to uncover the truth.

Non of this is probably making any sense, but I will reveal more in the future. For now I still have a lot of work to do.

oh yeah and about the style of the game. By now you can tell its going to be a 3d game, but nothing fancy like uncharted or skyrim or anything. I am creating low poly models because I just prefer the way low poly models look, they are just better overall because not many people have powerful enough pcs (and the fact that Im not even good at high poly modeling)

but anyway the style of my game is going to be very N64 like. The N64 was my favorite gaming system of all time.

My plan is trying to make it like a Modern Day N64 game. Not the best graphics, but I am really liking the way its turning out.

:)

Working on my first Original Game

Allo everyone! It has been a while since my last blog post and that is because I have been working on my very first original game. I have been developing everything from scratch, 3d models, enviorment, 2d images, animations, story, etc.

I have already made the main character and a lot of other parts of the game, but this is all for the beginning of the game. So the game is still in very early development stages. I really want to show some of my progress, but at the moment I think I will wait until I get a good amount of the game finished. As for the story, I have had an idea for the story in my head a long time ago and finally I can put it together through unity game engine.
I don't want to say anything about the story right now, but I will later on in the future.

As for the game itself, I am really putting in a lot of effort into this game and actually really trying to make a good quality 3d game. I'm not working on some cheesy iphone app or anything. I am trying to make a full out computer game.

One of my main goals is to create a really awsome story line that people will really like. So I'm really working hard on the story itself and the characters. I want both the story and characters to be memorable.

As for the gameplay, I want to make gameplay that is fun and doesn't get old. I want the game to be enjoyed from the beginning to the end. I am trying to make up an awsome zelda type gameplay mixed with other forms of gameplay. Another one of my goals is to make this game decent length, I'm not trying to make a game that people can beat in 10 minuets. Also i'm not going to rush this game and just slap a bunch of things together.
I will take as much time as I need until I think the game is good enough. :)

So for now I don't want to say anything about the game, but there will be a good amount of updates on it in the future. Also, hopefully I will  try and get a demo out there once I get further into development.

Testing character controller, movement and jumping in Unity3d

Snowconesolid here, today I just thought I would share a little demo I made a while ago in Unity. In this demo I am just testing out Jumping and moving a 3d character model. There are no animations given to this 3d model because when I made this I still did not know how to animate. This was made at the same time when I was going through the tornadotwins tutorials. So in this video you will see that very statue-like gameplay I was talking about in a previous blog post. But, animations are not the purpose of this video. This video is just showing how a simple platforming type game would look like. Also Jumping and moving around is not the only purpose. I wanted to test out importing your own 3d models into unity and then giving them a character controller. At first I could not figure out how to add character controllers to my own 3d models, and when I did they would be really messed up, but finally I got character controllers to work right.

Also I have updated the 3d character model seen in the video, now its has colors and ready for animations. This model will be seen again in a future game I plan on working on.

Animations for Character Models in Blender

In my last post I said that I would post some animations I have done in blender for the next post, which is this post. Confusing...
In game development I believe that animations are very important. Animations are what make the game feel more alive and real. If there were now animations for 3d game characters then all the games would be pretty dull. Basically the player would just be moving around a statue like object that always stays in the same position. So animations are very nice to have when it comes to games.

However, before any animations can even be created, a skeleton needs to be built inside the 3d model. This is called Rigging. Basically you are adding bones to the skin, which is the 3d model. In blender they are actually called bones. Once a skeleton is added to the model, its fun just to move it around in all kinds of funny positions.

But anyway here is a video of some very simple animations I added to some of the character models you have seen in the last blog post. Enjoy the music I have with the video to :) (Gerudos Vally)

The first animation is the rigged One piece model I posted in the last blog. This was actually my first working animation. Its suppose to be a walk cycle, or I guess a run cycle? well im not sure, it looked like a mix of both of them. This animation is not very good, but hey it works. I have improved since this one.

The second animation in the video is an animation of the female anime type character. This animation was much more smooth and better than the one piece animation. It is a run cycle.

The last animation is actually two animations put together. I split them later on to animate separately in the unity game engine. I made this weird robot type character with a red afro and gave him an animation for Idle, which is when the player isn't doing anything, they are just standing there, and the second animation is suppose to be a short walk cycle.

In blender Animating is actually very simple. Its pretty surprising at how quick you can actually create simple animations like the ones I made in the video.
In a future blog post I might make a video demonstrating blender animations inside the unity game engine.
Thats all for now folks. Thanks for reading.

Oh yeah about the statue idea. Don't get me wrong, a game where the player takes the role of a statue and lives in a world filled with other statues sounds very awsome. It needs to be developed!

Early 3D Modeling in Blender

Hey everyone Snowconesolid here again. Well I guess I will always be here because its my blog and Im the only posting the blogs, so I guess it was pointless to say that I am here...

Anyway, back on topic. Today I just want to share some of my early work I have done in blender. I started learning blender a while back now and these are the models I made when I was just learning how to use it and its tools that it comes with. Pretty much these are just my practice models. So these models are not the best ones and they are not really original because I used a background reference to create the models, which is actually a great way to begin 3d modeling if you are just starting.

So anyway here are my very first early models made in blender.
Before you check them out I would just like to say that since the time I made these models, when I was just a new blender student about almost 2 months back I have greatly improved in 3d modeling and have created many more other models that look much much better than these. Also my newer models are much more original, they are fully my own ideas and look much much better than what I use to be able to do. Also I feel very comfortable with blender now and I know a lot of its features and just how to use the program overall very quickly and easily. So if you are new to blender you will be very surprised at how simple it is to create pretty much anything you want in it once you understand how to use its features. Anything from Character models to weapons or objects can be created very quickly once you know your way around the program.
So if you are new to blender and feel a bit discouraged with the program don't be. Once you get to know the features and some of the basic key-board shortcuts you will feel like a very professional 3d modeler :)

Anyway enough of the boring wall of text. Here are the models!

Can you tell who this is suppose to be? If you are a fan of Futurama then you should be able to tell. At least I hope so, if not then my modeling is not so good.
Its Bender, the robot from Futurama. When I first started out I wanted a simple character to make. so I choose bender. Bender is basically just a trash can shape with arms and a head.
I like to call it Bender Blender!

Later on I decided to add a little color to my Bender Model. As you can tell this is not the best texturing but its not bad. Gold Bender.

Here is a Monkey Tower I made. Im not sure how I ended up with this, but originally I was trying to make a checker board typed object. It somehow turned to the monkey tower.
Here is one of my first Human type 3d models. This is actually suppose to be based off one of the characters from the anime One Piece.
Over here is the same model, except for this one I have added a armature, and that basically means that I gave this 3d model a skeleton so that I can be able to animate it and move it around instead of having it stay in its current position forever like a statue. Ill get more into Character Rigging and Animating later on in future blog post.
And here is probably one of my best looking models I made when I was just starting blender. I used some 2d image I found as a reference for this one.
Later I decided to make it a little bit more original and add some very basic colors to it.

Then I decided to make it much more original, so I created some clothes for the model. It looks a little difficult but actually creating clothes and extras for your 3d model is very simple.

After a while of practicing I decided to create my very own character from scratch. I wanted to make something very simple so I decided to go with a sack boy like look from Little Big Planet. I also created some extras like a sword and Skull type shiled/mask.
Later I just added some textures to it to make it a little more interesting.

And Then I decided to just play around with it, so I went back and just edited it and created this armor like uniform for my character. Theres a  bit more to this character actually, I was planning on using it in a future project, but then decided to do something else. I will talk more about that in the future.

Thats pretty much it. Once again these are just some models I made a while back as practice when I was learning how to use blender. Also you might have noticed that all of these models are very blocky looking, and thats because they are all low poly models. I actually prefer low poly models because they kind of have that actual video game look to them unlike the more realistic models you see in most games today like the Uncharted Games. Don't get me wrong games with realistic models are awsome and look great. However, I believe that low poly models have a lot of advantages to them. Also low poly models can look very nice. In blender you can actually make a low poly model and then smooth it out so that it does not have that block/box appearance to it. After smoothing things out the model looks much much better, I would say about ps2/gamecube type looking models after smoothing everything out.

In the future ill post some more 3d modeling that I have done, some that look much more improved over these ones.

In the next blog post I will probably talk about animating in blender and skeletons and show some animations I have done and also upload some videos.

So thats about all for now. Thanks for reading.
